You can choose naturally durable wood but this is often expensive and as many durable timbers are tropical hardwoods from environmentally sensitive areas you wish to avoid using them. Softwoods like pine and spruce are commonly used and these come mostly from plantations where more trees are planted than are cut down. Such timbers however, often have large amounts of the outer sapwood which is easily attacked by insects and fungi and in many situations it is best to protect such wood against these organisms by preservative treatment. Make sure if it’s at risk it’s protected against rot, insects, termites and marine borers.
