Thanksgiving, now a heavily celebrated American Holiday, as we know it today began as an Autumn harvest feast between the New World colonists and the Wampanoag Native Americans. However, tradition of “giving thanks” for the harvest and the crop yielding land is a tradition that had been practiced by a wide variety of Native American tribes for centuries prior to the arrival of the British colonists. This first celebration of giving thanks within the American colonies between both colonists and Native tribal members is recorded as having taken place in 1621. Over 350 years later we, as proud citizens of the United States of America, are still celebrating this Holiday which was birthed from the Union of two very different cultures as well the hope and promise of peace in a new land.
