Description: EuroMeccanica, Inc. was started by Michael Shiffer in 1991. It was the next logical stage in his automotive career: a place where he could practice his diverse skills in auto repair, restoration and racing. EuroMeccanica's reputation has grown steadily, and it is now a well-known highly respected shop. It has overseen the partial and total restoration of Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Daimler and other cars. It has prepared track cars for competition, driving schools and vintage racing. Repairs and maintenance are performed on modern European cars. Michael is a tech advisor for NYBMWCCA and EuroMeccanica hosts their annual Beach Party, where dozens of BMW owners and enthusiasts converge to learn more about their cars. Services on modern cars include: Maintenance and service on most European cars, especially BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar (pre-Ford), Land Rover, Rolls Royce Mechanical and electrical repairs on most European cars Electrical and electronic diagnosis on Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Land Rover and others Brakes, shock absorbers and mufflers on any car Services on older cars include: Reviving cars that have been in storage Engine rebuilding Component rebuilding, such as manual transmissions, steering gear Maintenance and repair Partial and complete restorations, overseeing work which is not done in-house, such as painting, upholstery and rechroming Race car preparation: Installation of roll bars, harnesses, racing seats, fire systems and other safety devices Suspension modification, such as coil-over conversions, larger sway bars and urethane bushings Chassis stiffening and reinforcement Bolt-on engine modifications, such as cams, cold-air boxes, exhaust systems and larger radiators Fuel cell installation Two-way radio installation Michael Shiffer started working on cars in 1977 at Grand Prix SSR in Long Island, a Ferrari dealership, race and restoration shop. He started as an apprentice panel beater, but within three years he was the principal restoration mechanic there. After leaving Grand Prix, he worked as a caretaker in northern Westchester for two retired actresses. He and his wife also performed puppet shows around New York and at the New York Rennaissance Fair. In 1982, he started a mobile repair shop business specializing in English and German cars. He went to work for Le Team Racing, a showroom stock endurance team, in spring of 1986. By fall he was crew chief and team manager. In the next four years, Le Team's BMW was highly successful in IMSA's Firehawk series, and the car Michael built went on to dominate SCCA's MARRS series in 1992. In 1991, Michael opened EuroMeccanica. Michael's skills include sheet metal repair and fabrication, gas welding, electrical and electronic diagnosis, race car preparation and performance modification, nearly all aspects of mechanical restoration and repair, and rubber-frog-launching catapult fabrication. He also directs plays. Like most mechanics, he is expected by his family to fix anything that breaks. These things include his children's many musical instruments, their toys (when they were younger), sewing machines, leaf choppers, coffee makers, boilers, printers, etc. Like most mechanics, he fixes these things, knowing his reputation will be shattered and his ego devastated if he fails. He lives and works in Mount Vernon and has two accomplished children. His daughter is a sculptor who uses many of the skills Michael taught her (welding, e.g.) in her work. His son is a jazz saxophonist and composer.
